August is not only a song by Taylor Swift, but also the peak harvest for grains and fast-growing summer produce.
Foodie Dates
August has both foodie dates and is a foodie month, thanks to another celebration coined by Ronald Regan – National Peach Month. #NationalPeachMonth
If you like your fruit a little bigger, Monday, August 3 is National Watermelon Day #NationalWatermelonDay, and Sunday, August 9 is Melon Day. #MelonDay
The second week of August, Monday 10 to Sunday 16, is Afternoon Tea Week. Afternoon tea comprises sandwiches, scones, petit fours, sweet cakes and baked goods, typically served with black tea and milk. #AfternoonTeaWeek
Controversially, Thursday, August 20 is International Hawaiian Pizza Day. How do you feel about pineapple on pizza? #InternationalHawaiianPizzaDay
And finally, Monday, August 31 is not only Late Summer Bank Holiday but also National Eat Outside Day. So make sure you head down to your local bar, cafe or restaurant which is stocked by Four Seasons Fruiterers, of course, and enjoy a bank holiday lunch in the garden.

Seasonal Fruits for August
Apricot
Apricots are drupes, or stone fruits, that are related to nectarines, apricots, plums, cherries and almonds amongst many others. They are harvested from late July to August – ripe fruits are soft, rich in colour and best eaten as soon as possible.
Figs
Figs are the fruit of the ficus tree. But are they fruit? Figs are actually an inflorescence – like wheat and the foxglove – a cluster of many flowers and seeds contained inside a stem. Some varieties of figs are pollinated by wasps that die during the process, so vegans may avoid eating them. However, many commercial figs are grown without wasp pollination, so they shouldn’t pose a problem.
Seasonal Vegetables for August
Kohlrabi
Kohlrabi is also known as German turnip or turnip cabbage. It is a biennial vegetable like carrots, cabbage and onions. Biennial vegetables are harvested in year one before they flower in year two, as flowering tends to make them woody, bitter and tough. Kohlrabi is an important part of Kashmiri cuisine and Vietnamese cuisine, where it is eaten with rice.
Watercress
Watercress is an aquatic vegetable and is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables to be consumed by humans. It can be traced back even as far as 400 BC, being used by Hippocrates on Kos.
