There will be some temporary supply issues affecting spinach over the coming days.
The most recent heatwaves and prolonged high temperatures are causing stunted growth and yellowing of spinach crops. Farmers are seeing much lower harvest yields than expected.
To keep up with demand, spinach is being harvested at an immature size. The stalk length is shorter and does not allow for typical blade height.
Our suppliers are reporting cotyledons – “seed leaves” – in packed spinach.
Cotyledons are the first leaves that emerge when a seed sprouts. They are part of the plant’s embryo and provide essential nutrients to the young seedling until it grows its first set of true leaves and can produce its own food through photosynthesis.
It is impossible to sort and remove these cotyledons before packing, but be assured, they are not foreign bodies or a cause for concern.
Thank you for your understanding,
