Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables for June

June marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Midsummer, the celebration of summer, take place on or near the summer solstice in mid to late June.

There are a few foodie dates in June. There is, of course, Father’s Day on June 21. While Mother’s Day seems the perfect time to go out for brunch, lunch, dinner, or dessert, a Father’s Day meal out is often overlooked. So why not take Dad out this year?

Seasonal Fruits for June

Strawberries are best in summer, and the British season runs from late May to early September. Did you know The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch was known as the “Strawberry Painting”?

Gooseberries come in tart or sweet varieties. They are in season from May to September, but best from June to August. The gooseberry is a type of ribe like redcurrants and blackcurrants. A fool is traditionally made with cooked, stewed, or pureed gooseberries with smooth whipped cream or rich custard.

Seasonal Vegetables for June

Artichokes are a variety of thistle. In Italy, artichoke hearts are the usual vegetable for the spring section of the four-seasons pizza.

Mangetout or Mange tout are snow peas. Like snap peas, they have edible pods. But unlike snap peas, they have flat pods with thin walls. Mange tout are eaten whole whilst unripe.
