Crop Update – The rain in Spain

The Southern region of Spain has been exceptionally wet as Storm Leonardo, the sixth major low-pressure system in 2026, hit the Iberian Peninsula.

A red weather alert has led to rivers reaching record levels. The ensuing flooding has caused landslides, fallen trees and road closures. This alert comes just a week after a red alert for Storm Kristin. With predictions showing that the temperatures are due to drop next week, this could mean produce may be in short supply.

Constrains are being felt in Spanish aubergines, broccoli, and key salad vegetables like cucumbers, peppers and lettuce. But it is not just the crops. The severe weather is leading to infrastructure damage, causing delays and pauses in harvesting, packing and transportation.

The European Food Information Council has a simple interactive tool that shows when fruit and vegetables are in season across Europe. Give it a go here
