Crop Update – Southern and Western Spain

The agricultural sector in Extremadura and other southern and western Spanish regions is facing significant challenges due to adverse weather, including high rainfall.

Yields are being affected by problems, including waterlogging causing root asphyxiation, frozen crops, and difficulties accessing fields.

Leafy vegetable crops like sprouts, mini Romaine lettuce, and spinach are being impacted by reduced numbers. For iceberg lettuce, for example, it is possible to remove damaged leaves, reducing their size but not their numbers.

The European Food Information Council has a simple interactive tool that shows when fruit and vegetables are in season across Europe. Give it a go here
